Health & Safety Reviews

Our approach to the health and safety reviews is the appraisal of best practice in general health and safety management and of leisure specific requirements (e.g. pool and gymnasia safety systems). Our expertise in leisure facility operation provides a unique service to assist in the proactive management of health and safety.

The review will be based on the requirements of HSG 65 Successful Health and Safety Management and will cover:

  • Health and safety management.
  • Facility-wide health and safety issues – COSHH, electricity and fire.
  • Area by area health and safety safe systems of work e.g. pools,
  • gymnasia, and sports hall etc.

The review programme will consider some of the following areas as agreed and where applicable:

Health and safety management system

This is an examination of the organisation’s planned approach to health and safety management and in particular:

  • Health and safety policy
  • Competence
  • Risk assessment
  • Safe systems of work
  • Monitoring, measurement and review

The auditor will review the planned approach of the company, with specific reference to HSG65, Successful Health and Safety Management, published by the Health and Safety Executive.

Facility-Wide Health and Safety

This stage will include (as appropriate) various building-wide hazards and the adequacy of their control. For example:

  • Emergencies and evacuation
  • Fire safety
  • Co-operation with others on site
  • First aid arrangements
  • COSHH
  • Electrical safety
  • Noise
  • Display screen equipment
  • Safety signs
  • Asbestos
  • Domestic water/legionella management
  • New and expectant mothers
  • Employment of young persons
  • Manual handling
  • Contractor management
  • Other hazards will be covered at the discretion of the auditor

Facility Specific Health and Safety

An area by area review of the current arrangements. (i.e. pools, gym, sauna).  Whilst inevitably a sampling exercise, every effort will be made to cover all key aspects of service safety.

The purpose of the review is much more than to meet a good practice requirement.  An effective review identifies the foreseeable hazards in the operation of the leisure facility and examines the likelihood of the hazard causing harm.  The outcome of the review should be an action plan for risk reduction.

A written report will identify issues for improvement, guidance on rationalisation of documentation to meet your objectives, training requirements and advice on addressing relevant issues.  It will be important to identify corporate as well as site specific improvements.
