Golf Courses

Maintaining a safe and healthy workplace at a golf club is a shared responsibility that involves everyone from directors and management teams to employees, part-time staff, and volunteers. With golf clubs often having varied ownership and management structures, it’s essential to ensure that legal duties and responsibilities are clearly defined.

Safety on golf courses

Effective risk management on a golf course requires identifying potential hazards and addressing foreseeable risks. A key component of this process is conducting thorough risk assessments. These assessments, which form the foundation of most health and safety legislation, should outline specific hazards, assess associated risks, and detail measures to minimize the likelihood of injury.

Golf course maintenance presents unique challenges. Daily tasks, such as protecting greenskeepers from stray golf balls or safely using work equipment, highlight the importance of proactive risk management. Equipment commonly used on golf courses includes:

  • Work machinery: Tractors, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), buggies, work trucks, self-propelled mowers, pedestrian-controlled mowers, and turf maintenance machines.
  • Hand tools and portable machinery: Strimmers, chainsaws, and workshop tools.
  • Irrigation systems: Fixed equipment essential for maintaining the course.
  • Lifting equipment: Tractor loaders, forklifts, excavators, hydraulic jacks, axle stands, and climbing/fall arrest systems.

Machinery safety

Unfortunately, the majority of fatal and serious accidents on golf courses are linked to machinery use. Mechanical hazards can pose significant risks not only to operators but also to nearby staff, golfers, and even members of the public.

By implementing comprehensive health and safety practices, golf clubs can reduce risks, protect their workforce, and create a safer environment for everyone on-site.
