Course Introduction
The Health and Safety Management course is a leisure management course designed to cover the primary requirements of health and safety within leisure, sport, recreation and culture facilities giving successful candidates the knowledge and skills required.
The course is suitable for staff working in leisure management as a Duty Officer, Assistant Manager or Manager or for staff with responsibility for day to day operation or who may be expected to cover these roles on an occasional basis.
The leisure management course incorporates studies and scenarios relevant to the leisure industry, leisure managers, sports centres, health clubs, gyms, swimming pools and similar leisure facilities and culture environments, so delegates can relate what they are being taught to the environment in which they are working.
Course Aims
On successful completion of the training, delegates will be able to:
- Explain the key components of a health and safety management system, including the role of the Health and Safety Policy, local operational procedures, risk assessment, training and communication and active and proactive monitoring of health and safety performance.
- Understand the legal framework within the UK, the sources and importance of health and safety information, law enforcement and the difference between criminal and civil law.
- Compile risk assessments and accompanying written procedures in key operational areas and advise upon facility maintenance and the safe use of contractors.
- Describe the key requirements of current legislation that is relevant to the sport and physical activity sector.
- Supervise and manage health and safety in their workplace more effectively by understanding the importance of operational procedures and the potential consequences of deviation from such operational procedures.
The training is delivered by experienced leisure professionals who are all qualified leisure health and safety consultants who provide such a service with leisure industry professional qualifications as members or fellows of the Charter Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (MCIMSPA or FCIMSPA respectively) and a minimum of Graduate membership of IOSH (Cert IOSH) who are working towards chartered membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH). CMIOSH team members are listed on the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR).
The training programme includes discussion of relevant civil and criminal court cases, the outcomes and the lessons learned from them.

- The legal framework – Acts, Regulations, Approved Codes of Practice, guidance notes, law enforcement, criminal and civil law
- Risk assessment within an integrated management system
- Health and safety behaviour and culture
Section: 2 – Practical application of safety principles
- Fire safety risk assessment and emergency planning
- Electricity and electrical appliances
- Manual handling
- Safety signs
- Lone working, assault and violence
- Organising and managing maintenance: contractor safety, statutory inspections, working at height, permits–to-work
Section: 3 – Occupational safety and health
- Accident reporting, RIDDOR and first aid assessments
- Asbestos surveys and management planning
- Special employee groups – new/expectant mothers and young people
- Hazardous substances and personal protective equipment
- Controlling legionella bacteria
- Working time
- Organisational and individual stress and the HSE management standards
- Noise/vibration: measurement and control
- Drugs and alcohol policies and procedures
- Workplace, work equipment, ergonomics and workstation safety
- Working at height
Certification
This three day course is run by Quality Leisure Management Ltd (QLM). For successful candidates, the course leads to a QLM (CIMSPA Endorsed) Health and Safety Management in Leisure and Culture Facilities certificate.

The course concludes with a multiple choice assessment paper.
